Starfish may love coffee, but I love it even more, especially when it’s served alongside a delicious brunch from a trendy London cafe! Save yourself the hassle of a 24hr flight and indulge in Australian style dining from the comfort of the UK. This bright, colourful and fun cafe adorns the high-street of Aldermans Hill, where independent cafes are plenty and artisan coffee houses take pride of place. Starfish Loves Coffee may not be shy of competitors, but it certainly makes its mark – if you like your eggs rich and indulgent, your tastebuds tingled by sweet and savoury, and your waffles served thick and bouncy, then Starfish is the perfect spot for you.

For those of you who’ve tackled a trip to Australia, then you’ll be all too familiar with the comforting excess of Australian breakfast – experimental flavours, thick, buttery pastries and bold, bright designs, Starfish Loves Coffee is reminiscent of hip, surfer-style dining. I was reminded of a trip to Rollers Bakehouse in Manly, off Sydney bay, a pink plastered, plant packed hipster hotspot, where the food and coffee have drawn in crowds from afar – while you won’t be able to surf off your breakfast on the cobbled streets of London, Starfish Loves Coffee certainly welcomes a similar crowd of young coffee lovers, families and foodies.

What to Order?

The star of the show for me, was the coffee – it was a thick, creamy, bitter sweet delight. I ordered a cafe latte with oat milk, and it was one of the best coffees I’ve tried in some time. The service is quick, friendly and chatty & the atmosphere is energetic and welcoming. If you don’t have time to settle for a full meal, grab a coffee and sit outside, lapping up the cool winter rays with a toasty cup of coffee.

  1. Turkish Eggs £10

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This was a recommendation from a friend, who professed it to be a creamy and dreamy dish – she wasn’t wrong. The poached eggs had a perfectly smooth exterior with an oozy yolk filling and were paired beautifully with the greek yogurt, feta, chilli butter concoction. Delicious no doubt and a generous serving, but if you fancy something light, this dish probably isn’t for you – it’s incredibly rich and packed full of flavour. In my opinion, it should have been served with a more doughy style of bread, possibly a fluffy, toasted brioche slice. The crispy sourdough didn’t soak up the flavours, nor balance them – this dish needed to even its ratio of rich to plain.

  1. Black Bean Fritters £13

Rating: 3 out of 5.

These punchy, aromatic balls are topped with a perfectly poached egg, and lay on a bed of salsa and yogurt. These were well received, but similarly to the Turkish eggs, just needed something to balance out those flavours.

  1. Panko Tiger Prawns (side) £5.5

Rating: 4 out of 5.

These were crispy, juicy and not too oily – beautiful pink, tender prawns and a delicious Panko crust to coat them. We spotted someone ordering these as we entered and we couldn’t resit a try. My only criticism is the price, which I think is a little steep for only 3 prawns, especially as a side addition to your breakfast or lunch.

Additional Comments

There’s little you can fault at Starfish Loves Coffee – the service is amazing, the atmosphere is lively, the food is fresh and the coffee is exceptional. It’s a fun, family-friendly spot nestled in the heart of Palmers Green, located opposite a beautiful park – if you’re new to the area, an exploring foodie or simply fancy a visit, then don’t hesitate to make you way over to this delightful cafe, you won’t be disappointed.
