Home to British broadcasting legend and the culinary creator of blue soup, Bridget Jones – Borough Market may be less well known for its cinematic history than Notting Hill, but they have one thing in common…Hugh Grant!

Exploring London’s markets is one of my favourite activities (especially being unemployed and on a budget). Although I have to resist the temptation to buy something from every stall, it doesn’t hurt to give into my foodie cravings from time to time. Whether you’re shopping for ingredients, confectionaries or lunch to go, Borough Market has it all & better yet, at affordable prices. Freshly made paella, warm crusty loafs, tangy apple crumble and more – the list of options is endless in this food lovers paradise. Munch on the move or take a seat towards the Southbank side of the market, Borough is your oyster (you can even buy these too).

For those of you who prefer a more relaxed dining experience, complete with a table and chair, then be sure to book yourself into an on-site restaurant – either positioned upstairs overlooking the buzz, or seated nearby with a view, you can experience the lively market atmosphere seated rather than standing. First time visitor may be spoilt for choice, so I’ve listed some recommendations below:

  • Padella – Italian, pasta – £
  • Arabica – Middle Eastern – ££
  • Wright Brothers – Seafood – £££
  • Porteña – Argentinian – £
  • Arthur Hooper’s – Small Plates – ££

Those are just a few to help you get started, but don’t be afraid to follow wherever your taste buds lead you – sometimes it’s nicer to take a look around before deciding on your dining destination.

Come rain or shine, Borough Market is open for business – one of the more welcome features of a London market is having a constant roof over your head. No need to pack the brolly, you’ll be safe from the storm whilst sipping on a hot cup of artisan coffee. When the timid British sun does decide to show it’s face, I recommend heading down to the Southbank. Book a spot at the Globe Theatre, take a trip to the Tate, stop by the skate park, shop the vintage book fair and head down to the Southbank centre. Walking from London Bridge to the London Eye is what I would call an ideal London day out!

Borough after hours

Just because stalls are emptied and traders disappear at 5pm, this doesn’t mean the show is over. The evening scene at Borough Market is just a lively as during the day, except street food gets replaced by wine and cocktails. Located between London Bridge and Bank, Borough attracts a working crowd, who pile into the pubs and bars that circle the food hall, after calling it a day’s work. There’s a little something for everyone – cocktails, mocktails, wine and beer – step into Borough for the evening cheer.
