I had no idea what to expect from Top Secret Comedy Club – I’d never before been to a stand-up comedy event, but had read online that this was a fun, cheap and unusual night out. Before arriving, we discussed the possibility of being sat front row, and anxiously hoped we’d get a seat away from the limelight…but of-course, just my luck, we were sat centre stage, front row, just a few inches from the microphone. Turns out, I’m way more attention seeking than I thought & revelled in the spotlight, being picked on by comedians and laughed at for studying English at university. Front row seats are arguably the best in the house, so my advice is: down a few more drinks & don’t be shy!
The Monday night line-up was brilliant. Hosted by Nico Yearwood (aka the Bajan Comedian), we experienced the likes of Robert White, Harriet Kemsley, Luisa Omielan and many more. Monday nights are the notorious ‘new material’ nights, so the audience become the comedy guinea pigs. I for one, really enjoyed this – the comedy felt far more casual, raw and authentic. My friends and I were laughing all evening, at both refined jokes and the works in progress. Even if comedy isn’t your thing, Top Secret Comedy Club is an evening you won’t forget & one you’ll be desperate to return to. Its wallet friendly, bold, energetic and quirky – a night of laughter, booze and top tier humour.
I didn’t manage to take any photos inside, and to be honest, I’m glad I didn’t – Having never been before myself, it was a pleasant surprise entering into the bustling, intimate comedy cellar. The bar is incredibly cheap – £6 for a double G&T and £20 for a cocktail pitcher (these are HUGE)! I couldn’t believe my luck…London prices aren’t usually so forgiving. As an unemployed 23 year old, it’s refreshing to be able to have a fun night in the city without the financial burden. The club runs a ‘donate what you think it was worth’ policy & it would surprise me if anyone chose to donate nothing at all – I think it’s really important to keep places like this alive, especially after the previous two years, so I recommend donating what you can, even if it’s only a few quid.
