The Isabella Plantation

  • Where? Richmond Park, Richmond TW10 5HS
  • When? May – June (this is when the azaleas are in full bloom, however the park is open all year round)
  • How Much? Free (and parking is also free)

Nothing could have quite prepared me for the explosion of colour that I was met by upon entering the unassuming gates of the Isabella plantation. Buried deep within the green plains of Richmond Park, nestles an oasis of Azaleas, Rhododendrons and Camelliasa – this pixie paradise boasts a chasm of plush pinks, marvellous magentas, plum purples and bright glistening whites.

First planted in the 1830’s the Isabella Plantation is home to towering blossoms, rippling rivers and plush green scenery. During the early weeks of May – June, you will find a carpet of bluebells sprouting between the grassy blades, painting the forest a deep mauve. Stretching across a 40 acre woodland, the Isabella Plantation is a vibrant maze. With lakes lined by abundant blooms, passage ways carved into the hearts of azalea blossoms & cascading willow canopies shielding the lakeside, you’ll be sure to fall in love with this magical plantation.

I recommend getting to the park early, especially if you’re driving and will need a place to park, as it starts to get busy just before midday. There are onsite cafes located in the car park, but a lot of people bring a picnic and settle down for a lunch in the sun within the park (there’s a great spot towards the top of the plantation at the opposite end to the main entrance). If you spend less time within the Isabella Plantation than expected, do not fret as Richmond Park is equally as beautiful – walk amongst the woodlands and you may just spot some deer!
