Located on the cusp of Covent Garden square, sits a decadent hideaway, Balthazar. Adorned by an elaborate facade, this beautiful French bistro is an inviting venue for brunch, lunch, dinner or just a light snack from their patisserie. Balthazar is no less dazzling as you step inside, with a glistening ambiance, rich red leather decor and rustic wall length mirrors…and it is even more impressive during the Christmas period. On the few occasions that I have visited Balthazar, I have always been met by a bustling atmosphere, full tables and melodic conversations. Despite it’s seemingly secluded exterior, you will not be disappointed by the beaming energy that awaits you inside.

Whilst its ornate appearance may allude to a hefty bill, do not be fooled by appearances. As with many restaurants in London, items on the menu vary in price, however for most plates and particularly brunch, it’s highly affordable. Whilst I opted for the warming comfort of Eggs Benedict with roasted ham and frites, my friends decided to indulge in the hearty, cheese roofed delight of the French Onion Soup. Despite being green with envy at first, my Eggs Benedict did not disappoint and I was pleasantly delighted by the light and creamy hollandaise sauce. The eggs were poached to perfection, oozing at the centre, and the ham was thinly sliced, complimenting rather than overwhelming the dish. The French Onion Soup went down just as well, with empty bowls and happy faces by the end of the meal.

Overall, my experience at Balthazar was incredibly positive, which also aligns with the general opinion of others I know who have been. The service is polite and efficient, the dining experience is lavish, yet affordable and the atmosphere is vibrant. I highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.
