Stein’s is well and truly a London hidden gem, as one of the few restaurants dedicated wholly to German cuisine. A quaint, yet charismatic restaurant that is a welcome retreat from the high street crowds – inside, you will find yourself swept into the warmth of a cosy alpine lodge, a mountaineers hideaway right in the heart of London!

Visiting in winter, I was amazed to find Stein’s transformed into a glistening winter grotto, beautifully decorated by pine garlands and dazzling ornaments. While its snug decor and hearty menu of bratwursts and schnitzel goes down a treat in the colder months, Stein’s is also a perfect summer destination, opening up its beer garden which overlooks the river. To top it all off, Stein’s boasts hostesses with the mostest, all rocking Dirndls and Lederhosens, adding to the flair of German tradition – it’s a unique and charming spot, with delicious food and fantastic service, highly worth a visit.

The Food

Nürnberger Würstchen vom Grill mit Sauerkraut, Kartoffelbrei und Salatgarnitur – £16

7/10 – A herby sausage dish served with a side of creamy mash potato and tart Sauerkraut. I absolutely love German food, so this ticked all the right boxes for me:

  • Zesty, crunchy sauerkraut ✔️
  • Smooth, buttery mash ✔️
  • Succulent, aromatic sausage ✔️

The portion sizes are incredibly generous, and I was quite frankly stuffed by the end of the meal – it was all worth it though! Whilst the food was undeniably delicious, I have to refrain from awarding it above a 7, as it didn’t quite blow me away. It was very reminiscent of a home cooked meal; lovely, but nothing out of this world. That being said, would I come back? Most definitely. I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant, the service, the decor and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. It’s also quite rare to find good German food in London, so Stein’s really stands out as a front-runner so far!
