This charming little restaurant is tucked away from the bustling high street in a small, sunken courtyard. At first glance, Phat Phuc may not resemble a traditional restaurant, as noodle bowls emerge from a street-food style bar to the side, while guests enjoy dining al fresco beneath a vibrant red canopy. It certainly stands out from anything else you’d spot in the borough of Chelsea and Kensington, and I think that’s precisely why people love it.
This modest little eatery draws in a large number of visitors, patiently queuing for their chance to slurp delicious Laksa broth and indulge in crispy spring rolls. Phat Phuc is renowned for its affordability and prompt service, which justifies the wait. In London, finding a complete meal for just £10 is a rarity, and despite the line of hungry visitors, the queue moves remarkably fast. However, I would advise against visiting with a large group, as seating is limited; it’s better suited for groups of up to 4 or 5.
Despite the unpredictable forecasts in London throughout the year, the outdoor dining remains incredibly comfortable, even during colder months. On a rainy day, outdoor heaters will keep you cosy, while steaming pots of Laksa fill the air with aroma and warmth. The setting is quite unlike anything else I’ve experienced in the city, surrounded by cobbled slabs and plush greenery, concealed away from street view. It’s a hidden gen that will make you feel as if you’ve left the buzz of the city entirely!
The Food
Phat Phuc offers a diverse selection of noodle bowls and sides, including Pho, dim sum, pork buns, and noodle salads. However, their specialty lies in the Laksa, a traditional noodle dish of Southeast Asia known for its rice noodles soaked in a spicy coconut broth. During my travels to the Northern Territory of Australia, I had the opportunity to try authentic Laksa, and I can confidently say that Phat Phuc’s version lives up to the real deal. The prawn Laksa is particularly outstanding, boasting a rich and creamy broth that perfectly complements the tender, plump prawns. Each bite of the thick, chewy rice noodles delivers a magical experience – I find myself reminiscing about this meal often. Overall, I’d rate the dish an exceptional 8.5/10, earning flying colours for being one of the most unique and memorable dining experiences I’ve had.
