Camille is one of Borough Market’s newest gems, a welcome addition that brings a touch of Parisian charm and vintage allure to the market’s vibrant restaurant scene. And though a recent arrival, it feels as if it has been part of the landscape forever.
If, like me, you love to sit outside and watch the world go by, Camille’s al fresco setup in the heart of London’s busiest market is the perfect spot. It is ideally located on the periphery of the market, discreetly tucked away along the border. On a warm, sunny day, there is really no better way to dine at Borough. And on cooler, less inviting days when you are drawn indoors, you will find yourself welcomed by a charming vintage interior. The warm wooden paneling, shelves of wine, and statement Art Deco lighting create the feeling of a secret local spot in Paris. It does not feel like central London at all.
The Food & Service
The highlight of our visit was most definitely the service. Our waiter was friendly, accommodating, and helped us navigate a complex and experimental menu. A word of warning: if you are looking for familiar French classics, this might not be the place for you. The menu offers a range of adventurous dishes, from lamb’s brain to veal sweetbreads (neither of which are for me). If you prefer something a little more recognisable, I would recommend heading to somewhere like Colbert or Ma Cuisine.
If I am being completely honest, I found the menu a little too complicated and struggled to understand it. Thankfully, our waiter helped us decode it, and in the end, we decided to share a few plates. Here is what we ordered and what we thought:
White Asparagus in a butter sauce
7/10 – This was honestly one of the highlights of the meal. The asparagus were incredibly fresh and clearly in season, paired with a deliciously light and buttery sauce. It was actually my mum’s favourite dish of the day. Simple, high-quality ingredients, beautifully prepared. It was just a shame the restaurant had not received their bread delivery that day, as I would have loved to soak up the remaining sauce with a wedge of baguette.
Crab in a choux bun
6.5/10 – Delicious, sweet, and light. The crisp top of the choux paired beautifully with the soft, creamy crab filling. It was such a pleasant surprise to try a savoury choux for the first time, and texturally it was perfect. The only thing that let it down slightly was that it was a little too sweet for my taste, so a small amount was enough before it became a bit sickly. Still, it was a super interesting dish, and once again, the high-quality ingredients really stole the show.
Monkfish Grenoblaise
8/10 – This was by far my favourite dish, although interestingly my mum disagreed. The fish itself was cooked to perfection, incredibly flaky, buttery, and tender, and paired with salty capers that cut through the richness beautifully. My mum found the dish a little too salty for her taste and was not particularly fond of the monkfish liver that was served alongside it. To my surprise, I really enjoyed it. It had a foie gras like texture, which is not for everyone, but slathered over the crouton, it was absolutely delicious.
The best way to describe the menu might be “hit or miss.” There are lots of diverse flavours that are not guaranteed to be to everyone’s liking. I would love to see a few more crowd-pleasers added, as this is not somewhere I could visit with just anyone. If you enjoy experimental dining and trying new flavours, you are sure to love it here. It is definitely a fun and unique experience, perfectly suited to Borough Market, where you have every type of restaurant under the sun. Would I come back? Yes, but maybe not in a hurry. I would need to spot something on the menu that I was really desperate to try to be tempted back.
