Famously waiting on the platform of Kew Gardens Station is Fuller’s suitably titled “Tap on the Line” pub, the only pub in London that greets commuters as they step foot off the train. With its greenhouse façade and botanical decor, Tap on the Line perfectly blends into the quaint town of Kew, home to Kew Gardens. It’s hard to avoid taking a seat and grabbing a pint (large gin and tonic) as you leave the station; with its inviting exterior and tempting location, it’s hard to believe that more London pubs haven’t decided to follow suit!
Inside, the pub is truly charming. There is a long, glistening bar, a bright and sunlit dining room, and a mosaic of colourful botanical paintings climbing the wall! On the weekends, Tap on the Line is one of the most popular spots for a bite of lunch (especially on market days) with locals crowding in to fuel up on beer-battered fish and a mountain of crisp roasties. The atmosphere is certainly lively, an echoing glassy chamber of laughter, chatter, and, of course, the crisp crunch of British lunchtime classics.
The food is everything you would expect from a London pub: rich and hearty, full of carbohydrates, and perfectly filling. I’m a big fan of the crispy beer-battered fish, which melts in your mouth and is served alongside a plateful of crunchy, fluffy thick-cut chips. While my preferred order is the fish and chips, my brother would argue that it is indeed the chicken roast dinner that you have to try… cue the family pub grub wars! Whatever you order, a visit to Tap on the Line will certainly not disappoint. It’s an iconic spot, with a vibrant atmosphere, and all you have to do is jump on the next train.
